We don't get much involved in politics here at Kids Crooked House, but it's hard for us not to get behind the
Let's Move campaign that's headed up by First Lady Obama. That's one of our central beliefs here: We need to get kids outside and moving and having found outside in the fresh air.
Here's how the Let's Move folks put it:
"Physical activity is an essential component of a healthy lifestyle. In combination with healthy eating, it can help prevent a range of chronic diseases, including heart disease, cancer, and stroke, the three leading causes of death. Physical activity helps control weight, builds lean muscle, reduces fat, promotes strong bone, muscle and joint development, and decreases the risk of obesity. Children need 60 minutes of active and vigorous play every day to grow up to a healthy weight."
But there's that part of about "healthy eating," too. No one has to tell us how hard it is to eat right all the time. We're working crazy hours trying to make Kids Crooked House a business we can be proud of, and it's hard coming home and spending a ton of time cooking a good dinner. It's so much easier to just throw in some chicken nuggets or some French fries or whatever's in the freezer than it is to cook up a well-balanced meal with fresh vegetables and things that aren't fried...
But you've got to give it a go, right? You know instinctively that all that processed food just isn't good for anybody, right?
We got a huge kick out of
Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution earlier this year, and he really helped us see that cooking good food isn't that hard if you just have the right food and tools available to you. And now, First Lady Obama is on the same track,
writing an op-ed today supporting a law that could make it much easier for kids to get good food in schools and in their homes.
Here's how she puts it:
"We owe it to the children who aren’t reaching their potential because they’re not getting the nutrition they need during the day. We owe it to the parents who are working to keep their families healthy and looking for a little support along the way. We owe it to the schools that are trying to make progress but don’t have the resources they need. And we owe it to our country — because our prosperity depends on the health and vitality of the next generation."
That's really what it is, too: Kids who can't get the right food, or can't get a chance to get out and play, just aren't getting a fair shake. Let's give them a fair shake.
